Privacy Policy — MoilStack .md

1. Overview

MoilStack .md is a desktop Markdown editor with an integrated AI writing assistant, developed by MoilStack Tech LLP. This policy describes what data the app accesses, how it is used, and what is never collected. MoilStack .md is designed with a local-first, privacy-respecting architecture — your files and settings stay on your device.

2. Data Stored Locally on Your Device

MoilStack .md stores the following data exclusively on your device inside the Windows application data folder (%APPDATA%\MoilStack .md\):

  • AI model configuration (provider name, base URL, model name)
  • API keys — encrypted at rest using Windows DPAPI via Electron's safeStorage API; never stored in plain text
  • Recent folders, pinned files, and file labels
  • Editor preferences (font size, font family, theme, startup mode)
  • Window size and position
  • Pre-edit document backups (stored in %APPDATA%\MoilStack .md\backups\)

None of this data is transmitted to MoilStack or any third party.

3. Data Sent to Third-Party AI Providers

When you use the AI assistant, MoilStack .md sends the content of the file you are currently editing — and optionally a selected block of text — directly to the AI provider you have configured (for example Groq, OpenAI, Google Gemini, Mistral, Together AI, OpenRouter, or a locally running Ollama instance). This transmission occurs only when you explicitly send a message in the AI chat panel.

MoilStack Tech LLP does not receive, store, log, or process this file content. The data goes directly from your device to the provider you choose. Each provider's own privacy policy governs how they handle that data. For local Ollama models, no data leaves your device at all.

Your API keys are sent only to the provider's own endpoint to authenticate requests. They are never sent to MoilStack servers.

4. No Telemetry or Analytics

MoilStack .md collects no usage data, crash reports, analytics, or diagnostics. No information about how you use the app — which features you use, how often you open it, or what files you edit — is ever transmitted anywhere.

5. No Account Required

MoilStack .md does not require you to create an account or sign in. No personal information such as your name or email address is collected by the app.

6. Your Files

MoilStack .md reads and writes only the files and folders you explicitly open through the app. It does not scan your file system, index files outside the folder you open, or upload your files anywhere.

7. Data Responsibility

MoilStack .md does not automatically back up your files. The application and its developers are not responsible for data loss resulting from file deletion, disk failure, accidental overwrites, or any other cause. You are responsible for maintaining your own backups of important files.
